What Causes Nosebleeds?

A nosebleed, medically known as epistaxis, occurs when the delicate lining inside the nose becomes irritated, inflamed or dried out. This lining contains many small blood vessels that can easily rupture. At the practice of Dr. Pablo Stolovitzky, we specialize in identifying why these vessels are rupturing and providing lasting solutions to prevent recurrence.

Common causes include:

  • Environmental Factors: Exposure to dry or cold air, particularly during Georgia winters.
  • Medical Triggers: Use of blood-thinning medications or frequent allergies and sinus infections.
  • Physical Irritation: Frequent nose blowing or nasal trauma.

Understanding the Different Types of Nosebleeds

There are two primary types of epistaxis and identifying which one you are experiencing is critical for proper treatment.

  • Anterior Nosebleeds originate in the front of the nose and are the most common type. They are usually mild and can often be treated with home care.
  • Posterior Nosebleeds: These originate in the back of the nasal cavity. While less common, they are more serious and occur more frequently in older adults or those with high blood pressure. Posterior nosebleeds typically require professional medical attention.

How To Treat a Nosebleed at Home

Most anterior nosebleeds can be managed safely with these steps:

  1. Sit upright and lean forward: Do not tilt your head back, as this can cause blood to go down your throat.
  2. Clear the airway: Gently blow your nose once to clear any large clots.
  3. Pack the Nose (Acute Bleeding): Roll a cotton ball into a tight, firm cylinder and saturate it with oxymetazoline (such as Afrin or Sinex). Gently insert it into the nostril with a slow, corkscrew motion until it fits snugly like a cork. Oxymetazoline acts as a vasoconstrictor, meaning it temporarily shrinks the small, swollen blood vessels in your nose to stop active bleeding quickly.
  4. Apply Pressure: Pinch the soft part of your nostrils together firmly.
  5. Wait: Breathe through your mouth and maintain constant pressure for 10 whole minutes without checking whether it has stopped.

If bleeding persists after 20 minutes of pressure, seek emergency medical care immediately.
