A fungal infection can cause nasal or sinus inflammation, which may lead to a sinus infection. There are four types of fungal sinusitis:
- Saprophytic Fungus occurs when fungus grows on top of mucus inside the nose
- Fungus Ball occurs when fugus gets trapped in a sinus cavity and forms a clump of material, creating a blockage
- Allergic fungal sinusitis occurs when a patient experiences an allergic reaction to fungi, leading to the creation of thick mucus in the sinus cavity
- Invasive fungal sinusitis is caused by a severe infection and can lead to destruction of the tissue within the nose and sinuses
Treatment for this type of sinus infection is case dependent. Surgery may be performed to remove the fungus and infected issue; antifungal medications may also be prescribed.
