A sinus tumor is the abnormal growth of cells that develops inside the membrane or bones within the sinuses. These tumors can be caused by exposure to harmful substances, HPV infection or smoking cigarettes.
Early symptoms of a sinus tumor are similar to a cold and can include:
- Persistent congestion
- Reduced sense of smell
- Facial pain or numbness
- Changes in voice
- Headaches
Diagnosis of a sinus tumor will require a physical evaluation and a review of your medical history. Your doctor may require the use of a fiberoptic scope or imaging in order to make a diagnosis.
Since a sinus tumor can be either benign or cancerous, treatment will vary. And while cancerous sinus tumors are rare, treatment options typically involve surgery, chemotherapy or radiation.
